Is CeraVe's Mineral Sunscreen Actually a Problem?
Yuka reads CeraVe's Hydrating Mineral Sunscreen SPF 30 at 24/100 without finding a single high-risk ingredient. Two of the eleven things it flags are the mineral UV filters themselves. Here is what the EU regulation says, and what we would actually do.

We read CeraVe's Hydrating Mineral Sunscreen in the Yuka app on 31 August 2026. It appears there as "Hydrating Mineral Sunscreen SPF30 Sheer Tint" and returns 24 out of 100, which puts it in the app's red "Bad" band — the lowest reading we hold for any CeraVe product except the paraben-preserved Renewing SA Cream.
Then we counted the flags. Eleven ingredients are marked. Two of them are moderate risk. None is high risk.
That is unusual, and it is the reason this page exists. Every other product in the range that lands this low does so because something in Yuka's red band is present. This one got to 24 by accumulation: eleven marks on a fifty-ingredient label, none of them individually serious.
And two of the eleven are the mineral UV filters.
The Full Reading
Yuka's flags, at the risk level it assigned each:
Moderate risk
- Aluminum stearate. Part of the surface coating on the mineral pigments, alongside the alumina and aluminium hydroxide further down the list. It keeps the powders dispersed instead of clumping.
- Phenoxyethanol. The preservative, again. It appears in almost every CeraVe formula and it is the single most common reason products from this brand sit below 50.
Low risk
- Titanium dioxide and zinc oxide. The two UV filters. Between them they are the entire reason this product blocks ultraviolet light.
- PEG-30 dipolyhydroxystearate, an ethoxylated emulsifier holding the pigment dispersion together.
- Triethanolamine, a pH adjuster.
- Poly C10-30 alkyl acrylate and carbomer, both texture and suspension agents.
- Behentrimonium methosulfate, a conditioning emulsifier.
- Salicylic acid, present near the end of the list at the concentration you would use for pH and preservation rather than for exfoliation.
- Disodium EDTA, a chelator.
Thirty-nine further ingredients came back risk-free: the three ceramides, niacinamide, sodium hyaluronate, cholesterol, phytosphingosine, the emollient esters, the iron oxide pigments that create the tint. Eleven plus thirty-nine is fifty, which is exactly the number of ingredients on the published label — two actives and forty-eight inactives. The reading accounts for all of them.
What the EU Regulation Says About the Two Filters
We looked both UV filters up in CosIng, the European Commission's cosmetic ingredient database, on 1 September 2026. They are not merely permitted. They are listed by name in the annex that exists specifically to authorise UV filters:
- Titanium dioxide: Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009, Annex VI, entry 27, maximum 25% in a ready-for-use preparation. It also holds Annex IV entry 143 as the colourant CI 77891, and an Annex III condition restricting loose powder forms that could be inhaled.
- Zinc oxide: Annex VI, entry 30, maximum 25%, with the same inhalation condition attached — "not to be used in applications that may lead to exposure of the end-user's lungs by inhalation", in the Commission's own wording.
CeraVe declares titanium dioxide at 5.5% and zinc oxide at 10% on its own product page. Both sit well inside the ceiling. The inhalation condition applies to sprays and loose powders, not to a cream you rub on your face.
Of the other nine flagged ingredients, our CosIng lookup found no entry in Annexes II to VI for aluminium stearate, triethanolamine, PEG-30 dipolyhydroxystearate, poly C10-30 alkyl acrylate, carbomer, behentrimonium methosulfate or disodium EDTA under their INCI names. Phenoxyethanol has one: Annex V, entry 29, capped at 1.0%.
The Other Side, and It Is a Strong One
Yuka's position on mineral filters is defensible on its own terms. Titanium dioxide and zinc oxide in nanoparticle form have been studied for penetration and for inhalation risk, and the environmental case against zinc oxide in reef systems is real and documented. Flagging them at low risk is not fabricated.
The problem is what the model cannot see. A sunscreen's whole function is to reduce a demonstrated cause of skin cancer, and there is no field in an ingredient-risk score where that goes. So a product built entirely from the filter class that dermatologists most often recommend for sensitive, reactive and paediatric skin — the class chosen precisely because it is the least likely to irritate — is marked down for containing it.
Compare it with a chemical-filter sunscreen and the shape of the problem gets clearer. We took apart La Roche-Posay's Anthelios range, where the low scores come from organic filters like homosalate and octocrylene, both of which carry genuine regulatory attention over endocrine activity. Those are the filters mineral sunscreen exists to avoid. Both products end up in similar territory on the app.
Our position, stated so you can argue with it: this is the clearest case on the whole site where following the score literally would make your health outcome worse. Everything else we have written about CeraVe involves a preservative you could reasonably swap away from at no cost. This one asks you to think twice about wearing sunscreen, and that is not a trade we would take.
Who This Is Still Fine For
- Anyone with reactive or rosacea-prone skin who cannot tolerate organic UV filters. Mineral filters are the standard recommendation for exactly this reason, and this one comes with ceramides and niacinamide.
- People who want a tinted SPF that doubles as a light base. The iron oxides that create the sheer tint also add some visible-light protection, which matters for melasma and post-inflammatory pigmentation.
- Daily-wear users who need a face sunscreen that does not sting the eyes or pill under makeup.
- Anyone whose alternative to this product is no sunscreen at all. That is not a rhetorical case; it is what a scary number in an app produces in practice.
Reasons to look elsewhere: if you want a formula with fewer flagged ingredients overall, this one has eleven, and no argument about the filters changes the other nine. If you are avoiding phenoxyethanol or ethoxylated emulsifiers by principle, both are here.
Higher-Scoring Alternatives
One honest caveat before the list: we hold far fewer sunscreen readings than moisturiser readings, and the highest-scoring one we have is not a mineral formula. Say that plainly rather than pretend the swap is like-for-like.
- Avène Cleanance Screen SPF 50+, 80/100. Higher protection, a much better score, and a dry-touch finish built for oily and blemish-prone skin. It uses organic filters rather than minerals, so it is the right answer if the score is what you care about and the wrong one if you chose mineral deliberately.
- Staying with a mineral filter and accepting the score. If your dermatologist steered you to minerals for a reason, that reason has not changed since you opened the app.
- If the tint is what you want, a mineral foundation with an SPF claim will not replace a dedicated sunscreen. Layering a tinted mineral SPF over an untinted one is the usual workaround, and it is not elegant.

Are titanium dioxide and zinc oxide safe in sunscreen?
Both are explicitly authorised UV filters under EU law, listed in Annex VI of Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009 at up to 25% each, with a condition against inhalable formats such as sprays. The product declares 5.5% and 10% respectively. That is the regulatory answer; it does not resolve the separate environmental argument about zinc oxide in marine systems.
Should I stop using it?
Not because of the score. If you want a higher-scoring option and are happy with organic filters, Avène's Cleanance Screen reads 80 and offers SPF 50+. If you need mineral filters for medical reasons, keep wearing this and take the number as information about the ingredient list rather than as a verdict on the product's purpose.
Our Verdict
A 24 with no high-risk ingredient in it is a strange number, and it deserves to be read carefully rather than acted on quickly. It comes from a long ingredient list with eleven small marks against it, two of which are the authorised mineral filters doing the actual work.
We would keep wearing it. If you want a better score in the same routine slot, Avène Cleanance Screen at 80/100 is the option we would put in front of you, with the caveat that it swaps mineral filters for organic ones. What we would not do, and would advise nobody to do, is skip sun protection because an app painted a tube red.
